Alright I've been gone long enough and screwed around long enough with the pile of sh** I have so it's time to build another rig that I'm sure I'll end up calling a pile of sh** before it's over so here's my new build thread. As they say out with the old in with the new "new to me anyway"!

Trail Runs / Table Mesa 1-1 or 1-4
« on: December 05, 2013, 06:23:33 PM »
Is anybody interested in a day run at Table Mesa on either New Years day or Saturday the 4th? Maybe hit up the normal trails for a few hours. I really don't want to be sitting at home the first of the year when I could be out wheeling.

Chevy / Engine idles high has no power
« on: November 25, 2012, 04:59:32 PM »
I've been having trouble with the engine in my blazer. At FF I started having carb troubles and when I got it home I found the inside of the carb rotting away, I called Holley and they sent me a new replacement. I installed it and when I drove it under load it back fired thru the exhaust. I changed the plugs and found #1 plug was fouled, while I was doing this I ran compression checks and had 140 to 135 across all 8. It ran great before the carb went bad.

Now it won't idle below 1500 rpm and under load it stutters and hesitates really bad, changing timing has little effect on the idle it just makes it run worse. I checked for vacuum leaks and can't find any and the floats are set correctly. Adjusting the air/fuel mixture screws don't seem to change anything. I'm really scratching my head on this as I've never had this much trouble like this but I'm at a loss and don't know what to do. I was planning on getting FI after Christmas but now I don't know if I should even waste my time with this engine. I'm at the point now if I have to change the engine to I'm done and going to part it out and scrap the rest. Any suggestions on what to do to get this thing to run right would be a huge help.

Builds / I'm broke so.......
« on: January 02, 2012, 07:58:26 PM »
I can't afford to buy a trailer to haul my junk all over the country and since I got my Dad's willy's running I can't take off with his trailer any time I want now. Yesterday I went out to my Dad's place and picked up what was the start to a tilt back trailer, a trailer tongue and a set of axles. The deck is mostly made out of 2x4 tubing and had been cut into three pieces some time ago so today I welded them back together then I started boxing in the tongue. I still need to get some more 2x4 tubing to add some triangluation to it and then plate were I welded it back together for more structural strength on the welds. I should have less that 500 bucks in this when it's done and it should haul anything I'll ever carry on it with no problem.

Trail Pics & Vids / Finishing 2011 wheeling at Bagdad, AZ
« on: December 31, 2011, 06:30:47 PM »
Went just outside Bagdad today to finish off 2011 having some fun exploring a new wash, can't wait to see everyone up here to run this trail with us.

Thomas was getting in on the action to.

I got a little hung up, doesn't go very well sitting on the frame LOL

This is the last fall of the wash we were in today, we didn't run the wash all the way because the jeep and toy are open in the front but we did walk it and it's a mile or more long and the obstacles get progressively harder up to this point. the road to get out is right above here.

There is a lower portion to this that we checked out which is doable but would be a full day and I don't think I can get my current rig through it without breaking an axle. It's time to get to work on my toy! Hope to get the AORAZ crew up here soon!

Like the title said, this Sunday I'm going to get the truck that has my Dana 60. :guitar:  :guitar:  :guitar:
It's a dually so I have to get the hubs machined, Eryc maybe you can tell me where you got yours done.

Builds / Willys build
« on: September 13, 2011, 09:42:22 PM »
Well I kept saying I should start a build thread for my Dad's Willys I've been rebuilding for him so here it is. My Dad is on this site also (backroad) so he can correct me on any details I get wrong. It's a 56 and has a buick 300 V8 & TH350, the rest of the running gear it had when I started was a model 18 T-case, D30 front with posi and a FF D44 rear with ARB and geared at 4:88.

This is what it looked like the day we pushed it in my garage and it's been sitting for about 7 years waiting on this build.

The first item on the list was to install the Currie 9in with detroit locker, he's had it for about 8 years so it's a little rusty. I had my buddy at Them Industries make the pieces for the u-bolt plates on his plasma bed, it's nice having that so close.

Next I built the front axle, it's a scout D44 and I put the ARB and 4:88 R&P out of the old rear axle in it. At this point we also decided full hydro steering was what this rig needed so I had my same friend mill, drill and tap the knuckle for me. I also built the spring perch for the spring over.

Next I pulled the D30 out to make room for the new axle, the outers from the D30 will be used on the D44. I also mocked up the portal and mounted the reservoir. I found out later that I mounted the reservoir to soon.

Next I started work on the model 20 case that was to go in. I installed a 3 to 1 kit and twin sticks. I wanted it to have front dig but was apprehensive about doing it because everywhere I read they said the shifter pills had to be removed and then it would be possible to put in high and low range at the same time and then boom. After much research on the net I found a guy that showed in detail where to grind the shift rails and it worked great. It's the first case I've built and it was much easier than I expected.

Since he has never had good brakes I had him get a hydraboost unit so he would have some power brakes. I got that installed, ran new brake lines from the master cylinder in the front and put on some header wrap to protect all the hydraulic lines. You can see I had to cut the bracket for the reservoir back off to make room for the MC and hydra boost. I'm quickly running out of room for everything.

Here's a couple othe pics of it as it sits right now. I want to get all the hydraulic lines done in the next few days then start extending the frame to move the axle forward 4 inches.

Here's a pic of my Dad's flat fender. We just brought it to my house today so we can get his Currie HP 8.8 in and then I will build a scout D44 with ARB for the front and do full hydro steering. Got to hurry up and get this done so I can put the toy in the garage and start on it. Hopefully he will get signed up on the site on of these days.

We found some fun about 15 minutes from my house today and I put a couple small scratches in the side of the blazer. I'm not quite sure what I have against this quarter panel since it keeps getting hit.

For those of you that have smart phones there is a cool app full of topo maps and more. It's called backcountry navigator pro and it costs 10 bucks and for that you get evey topo map(old and new) and USGS color aireal in the country and you can use like a gps to make your own way points and trips. It also works when you have no cell service. I just got it today so I'm still figuring out everything it can do.
