84 Ford River Rat
« on: June 29, 2010, 07:31:27 PM »
I picked up an 84 Ford pick up from my neighbor for 500 bones. Heres what it looked like when I drug it home.

I put a battery in it and tryed to fire it up and it ran like crap! I found water in the carberator and in the fuel tank. I installed a 10 gallon fuel cell in the bed for now. It runs but not great good enought to get stuck in the back yard. So I welded the rear end up and tested it out.

I took it down to the river and only got one shot of it just sitting. It did ok but carb needs to be thrown away. I have been tinkering here and there, and took the bucket seats out and installed a bench seat and put seat belts in it. I got bored the other night and was tired of seeing only half the trim on the truck so I took it all off. I have been going over it and fixing little things as I find them. I took the receiver hitch off because it hung down too far.  I also put mesh screen over the roof from the windshield to the rear roll bar. I took the doors off today and it seams to fit me much better now. I then had to see how far I could go on the RTI ramp before it felt like it was going to flop, seems like it will go until it flops! It feels alot different than the Zuk did but I'm getting used to it.

I just got it to take to the river and do lite wheeling. It runs pretty good minus the carberator. It has a 302 and a standard with the granny low. It has 3.45 gears in the diffs but in 4low it crawls slow with the 31's that are on it now. I wanted to build a rock crawler again but funds are REALLY low right now so this will have to do for now. I have two 35's and need two more to stuff under it and then it's gonna get a simple cage.

Im not Ford fan but interested to see where this is gonna go. With your past rigs im sure it will turn out to be a top notch rig.

Me neither I usually try to stay away from Fords! I'm kind of interested to where the build will lead also!

I got a 4412 two barrel Holley from a guy at work and rebuilt it today. I got it all bolted on tonight and it runs great and doesn't seam to stutter or crap out at any angle I can get it at around the yard.

I was bored today and was real tired of looking at the crappy rusty, faded blue silver paint and painted the Ford old Caterpillar Yellow. I need to finish it but took a couple pictures.

It's weird in the pictures it looks like the color of a school bus but standing next to it, it's a brighter yellow.

I haven't done a lot to this other than little stuff. I painted flames on the front. I should have my new 35X 12.50 15 Maxxis Bighorns today or tomorrow  then I'll need to cut whatever they hit! I think I'm gonna dovetail and maybe bob the bed after it drug on everything Saturday while wheeling.

Does this thing have a solid front axle, or the twin I-beam?

I got my new tires today they are Hankook Dyna Pro M/T 35X12.50R15. I got them all mounted up and had to cut about three inches out of the fenders to clear them.

My olds ones were 31's. These tires are pretty cheap but are soft and bite like crazy!
