Willys build
« on: September 13, 2011, 09:42:22 PM »
Well I kept saying I should start a build thread for my Dad's Willys I've been rebuilding for him so here it is. My Dad is on this site also (backroad) so he can correct me on any details I get wrong. It's a 56 and has a buick 300 V8 & TH350, the rest of the running gear it had when I started was a model 18 T-case, D30 front with posi and a FF D44 rear with ARB and geared at 4:88.

This is what it looked like the day we pushed it in my garage and it's been sitting for about 7 years waiting on this build.

The first item on the list was to install the Currie 9in with detroit locker, he's had it for about 8 years so it's a little rusty. I had my buddy at Them Industries make the pieces for the u-bolt plates on his plasma bed, it's nice having that so close.

Next I built the front axle, it's a scout D44 and I put the ARB and 4:88 R&P out of the old rear axle in it. At this point we also decided full hydro steering was what this rig needed so I had my same friend mill, drill and tap the knuckle for me. I also built the spring perch for the spring over.

Next I pulled the D30 out to make room for the new axle, the outers from the D30 will be used on the D44. I also mocked up the portal and mounted the reservoir. I found out later that I mounted the reservoir to soon.

Next I started work on the model 20 case that was to go in. I installed a 3 to 1 kit and twin sticks. I wanted it to have front dig but was apprehensive about doing it because everywhere I read they said the shifter pills had to be removed and then it would be possible to put in high and low range at the same time and then boom. After much research on the net I found a guy that showed in detail where to grind the shift rails and it worked great. It's the first case I've built and it was much easier than I expected.

Since he has never had good brakes I had him get a hydraboost unit so he would have some power brakes. I got that installed, ran new brake lines from the master cylinder in the front and put on some header wrap to protect all the hydraulic lines. You can see I had to cut the bracket for the reservoir back off to make room for the MC and hydra boost. I'm quickly running out of room for everything.

Here's a couple othe pics of it as it sits right now. I want to get all the hydraulic lines done in the next few days then start extending the frame to move the axle forward 4 inches.

Maybe but the main goal is to have it ready for Thanksgiving at the ranch.

I know my mom and dad plan on camping out there, a few of the old P4W group their friends with camp out every year. I'm undecided on whether or not I'm camping or just going out Saturday, I'll have to see what days off I can get.

I've gotten quite a bit accomplished lately. The frame has been lengthened in the front to move the axle forward 4", the front spring hangers are in place and the axle is hanging under the rig now and I'm ready to make the new shackles and mount. The hydro lines for the pump, hydroboost, reservoir and portal are all ran just need to run the lines to the ram and cooler. I had my friend with THEM Industries cut out the spring hangers and u-bolt plates on his plasma bed. I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

I really can't wait to get out and playl with you kids.  Just gotta see if n I've still got it, but I just don't like carnage.
